If you think about it Jason Donovan and Joy Division share a lot more than their initials.
Donovan’s “Too Many Broken Hearts” is the post new-pop answer to “Love Will Tear Us Apart”, a brash statement of defiance in the face of despair. Pete Waterman looks Ian Curtis in the eye and doesn’t flinch, he simply harnesses the sheer redemptive power of pop. He throws every electronic sound available into the mix, with a symphony of synthesised sounds, he challenges the idea of an easy escape.
Through Jason, and through Sonia and Kylie he takes Curtis’ words and throws them back at him: “dance, dance, dance to the radio”. Dancing to the radio is not dystopia. Dancing to the radio is something to be celebrated.
There are too many broken hearts in the world: love will only tear you apart if you let it.
